The avocado has been around for thousands of years and originated in south-central Mexico. In fact, it has been reported that avocados were being cultivated in Mexico as early as 500 BC, but they were not introduced into the United States until the 1870's.
The amazing thing about the avocado is it's nutritional value. The avocado is actually very nutrient dense and is an excellent source of many vitamins. A single cup of cubed avocados provides 25% of the daily value of vitamin C and 30% of our folate requirements. The avocado is also a rich source of vitamin E, vitamin K, and several of the other B vitamins. In addition to being rich in many vitamins, the avocado is also is a great help in obtaining our daily requirements of many minerals. One cup of avocado provides 21% of our daily potassium needs and is also a good source of magnesium, copper, and manganese. While acting as a great way to obtain many vitamins and minerals, the avocado has the extra benefit of being cholesterol-free and very low in sodium.
