A Friend
Over the years you begin to have a clear understanding of what a friend is. True friends, by definition of the word, don't come into your life everyday, but they do come; like earthly sentinels of your soul, specially chosen by the Knower of all things, for your individual circumstances and journey through life. No matter the length of time they are physically with us, they eternally remain in our hearts; that specific place of memory and meeting.
A friend can quiet a fear, help with perspective, and show you there's always room for humor. A friend shares your joy or sadness, regardless of what is going on in their own life. A friend gives you advice when there's some to give, remains quiet when there's none, and knows the difference between the two. Although you may equally be disturbed from hearing yourself talk about a problem, a friend listens to it for the hundredth time without rolling her eyes as if she's seeing some great star falling from the sky - she knows you'll find the answer one day. A friend keeps faith for you when yours is dwindling, and keeps confidence in you until yours is restored.
A friend says with strong resolve, "It'll come", "Things will work out", or "Keep following your heart", and you trust what she says because the conviction in her voice and something in your heart tells you that you can. Friends enable you to trust them by their words and deeds, remember you in prayers, and want for you good health, good love, and good life.
Above all, a friend, like a beautiful flower, unique in it's bloom, distinct and separate from any other, adds merit and grace to your life. I thank God for my friends, indeed.
