Quotes of America's Founders...

"Although guided by our excellent Constitution in the discharge of official duties, and actuated, through the whole course of my public life, solely by a wish to promote the best interests of our country; yet, without the beneficial interposition of the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, we could not have reached the distinguished situation which we have attained with such unprecedented rapidity. To HIM, therefore, should we bow with gratitude and reverence, and endeavor to merit a continuance of HIS special favors". John Adams

"God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this."
Benjamin Franklin

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever."
Thomas Jefferson

"We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We've staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity...to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God." James Madison

" I have sinned against heaven and before Thee in thought, word, and deed. I have contemned Thy majesty and holy laws. I have likewise sinned by omitting what I ought to have done and committing what I ought not. I have rebelled against the light, despising Thy mercies and judgment, and broken my vows and promise. I have neglected the better things. My iniquities are multiplied and my sins are very great. I confess them, O Lord, with shame and sorrow, detestation and loathing and desire to be vile in my own eyes as I have rendered myself vile in Thine. I humbly beseech Thee to be merciful to me in the free pardon of my sins for the sake of Thy dear Son and only Savior Jesus Christ who came to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me."
[George Washington; from a 24 page authentic handwritten manuscript book dated April 21-23, 1752 William J. Johnson; George Washington, the Christian (New York: The Abingdon Press, New York & Cincinnati, 1919), pp. 24-35.]

A Prayer from Anita Carman, Founder and President of Inspire Women

Lord, when we forget our history, our future becomes confused. When I was growing up in my country, those outside of America looked to America as a Christian country. When the statue of Liberty was built and the poem by Emma Lazarus read, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", many coming to America saw it as a kind and gentle nation because it was a nation under God. How could it be that in responding in mercy to those who have come to this great country that we have allowed our values to become confused to the point that we have lost our identity? Oh God, help us to remember our history. Help us to remember from whom our blessings and our strength came from. Help us to stand boldly and to be proud of our roots in you, so that we can move with clarity into the future. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Then Peace Will Enter

Here we are tip toeing around to find
nothing exciting about ourselves.
We carry wonder and envy at every turn
for a normal life in a world of super
over-indulgent beings that care for
nothing but themselves.

We turn to our inner self looking
for that higher notation of glory and creation.
It can not be found there, for “that”
can only be found in our Creator.

We search the day for newness and purpose
to find only us. But a new day is dawning
when the careless worshipers will search for
comfort and joy, receiving it with thanksgiving;
then peace will enter as a new day.

The Amazing Avocado

The avocado has been around for thousands of years and originated in south-central Mexico. In fact, it has been reported that avocados were being cultivated in Mexico as early as 500 BC, but they were not introduced into the United States until the 1870's.

The amazing thing about the avocado is it's nutritional value. The avocado is actually very nutrient dense and is an excellent source of many vitamins. A single cup of cubed avocados provides 25% of the daily value of vitamin C and 30% of our folate requirements. The avocado is also a rich source of vitamin E, vitamin K, and several of the other B vitamins. In addition to being rich in many vitamins, the avocado is also is a great help in obtaining our daily requirements of many minerals. One cup of avocado provides 21% of our daily potassium needs and is also a good source of magnesium, copper, and manganese. While acting as a great way to obtain many vitamins and minerals, the avocado has the extra benefit of being cholesterol-free and very low in sodium.

How did I miss what Jesus had to say about me and my marriage?
by: Gary D. Chapman

Someone once told me that marriage is like flies on a window pane. The flies on the inside are trying to get out and those on the outside are trying to get in.

I can identify with that picture. For months leading up to my wedding, I could hardly wait to be married. I was in graduate school, and I dreamed about how wonderful marriage was going to be. I had visions of coming home in the evening and studying in our apartment. I could picture her sitting on the couch; when I'd finish studying, I'd look up and our eyes would meet. Won't that be wonderful? I thought. A wife right there in the apartment!

After we got married I discovered my wife didn't want to sit on the couch and watch me study. While I worked she'd go downstairs and socialize with people in the apartment complex. And I'd think, This is just like it was before we got married. The only difference is my dorm room was a lot cheaper than this place.

What God Hath Not Joined

Why marriage was designed for male and female.
by Edith M. Humphrey

Our radically confused society is debating the meaning of marriage with increasing intensity. That question leads to a host of other issues—especially the boundaries of sexual behavior and the nature of procreation. No one is untouched by this debate.

Ignorance as Blessing

Foreknowledge: for God and not for us
by: Collin Hansen

With scientific advances, sometimes you need to read between the lines. At first glance, all looks well with a successful new test developed by researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. They can now test unborn children to discern if they have cystic fibrosis, b-thalassemia, or sickle cell anemia—ailments caused by a single mutated gene. Actually, tests already exist that can detect cystic fibrosis before birth. But they require doctors to insert a needle into the mother's womb, which sometimes results in miscarriage. The new test, announced online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, requires no such invasive measures. It compares the baby's DNA in the mother's blood with her own DNA. The key breakthrough came when researchers employed digital technology to count individual mutant or normal DNA sequences.

Who is Stormie Omartian and Where Does She Find Her Power?

Stormie Omartian is a bestselling author precisely because she doesn't have a picture-perfect life!

Seminary professors probably don't study Stormie Omartian, but perhaps they should. Judging by book sales, Omartian influences more prayers than anybody else in America (save perhaps Prayer of Jabez author Bruce Wilkinson). Most of her readers are women. Most of her books follow a formula.

Start with the titles: The Power of a Praying (choose one) Wife, Husband, Parent, Woman, or Nation.

The contents are similarly patterned. The Power of a Praying Wife, for example, considers every aspect of her husband's life: his wife, his work, his finances, his sexuality, his temptations. In each short chapter, Omartian explains why that area of a man's life matters, and how it can be transformed by God's help. She uses lots of experience from her own marriage. Then she offers a sample prayer, often two or three pages long. Finally there are "Power Tools"—Scripture verses to use in praying.

Schooled by the Psalms

Learning to pray is like playing the violin with virtuosos.
by: Ben Patterson

It isn't that our desires are unworthy to express to God in prayer. He is our loving and compassionate Father, and he listens to all we say with a kind and wise heart. But he knows better than we do what we need—and better yet, he desires things for us that we may not even desire for ourselves.
